Jung’s Barber Shop was a cornerstone of the underground businesses, providing traditional grooming services like haircuts and shaves to the men who passed through Ellinwood. Jung was a German-trained barber, which means he was trained as "barber-surgeon." He provided tonsilery and other medical work which is why there is an original wheelchair located in the corner of the barber shop.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Jung’s Barber Shop is its remarkable preservation. Visitors today can still see the original flooring, wallpaper, and barber’s mirror, transporting them back to an era when craftsmanship and community thrived beneath the streets. Even bullet holes in the walls remain, hinting at the untold stories of a bustling underground business district that once catered to a rough-and-tumble clientele.
As part of the Ellinwood Underground Tours, Jung’s Barber Shop remains a must-visit attraction, giving history lovers and curious explorers the chance to step into a hidden world that has remained largely untouched for over a century. Whether you’re fascinated by the town’s German heritage, its unique subterranean architecture, or the stories of the people who shaped Ellinwood’s past, this underground barbershop is a portal to an era long gone but never forgotten.
